Don't let engine problems ruin your day of boating. By following some basic maintenance habits, you can avoid the most common boat engine problems. Follow these basic steps to maintain your boat's engine. CALON GLORIA shares with you.
The marine engine owner's manual outlines basic maintenance procedures and has a schedule for regular maintenance. If you lose your owner's manual, your dealer can order a new copy for you. The C series and other strokes have different instructions.
Always replace the engine starting battery with another marine battery that has thicker plates and a stronger design than a car battery to withstand the vibrations and knocks that a boat can provide.
Secure the marine battery with a good battery tray, which should have a base that is screwed or bolted to the boat, and a rigid bracket or a locking strap that holds it to the base. You don't want the battery bobbing around in choppy water.
If you don't use the boat often, use a maintenance battery charger to keep the battery fully charged between outings.
If you are storing your boat in a climate with below freezing temperatures, the stern drive or inboard engine will need to have its cooling system flushed with antifreeze. This will drain all fresh water from the cooling system, which could otherwise freeze and damage the engine. Even engines with closed cooling systems equipped with antifreeze may need to be flushed to get the water out of the exhaust and heat exchangers.
Keep the fuel tank full and use a quality diesel fuel additive to prevent microbial growth. Check the fuel filter check bowl for water before each trip. Clogged seawater filters are the most common cause of diesel engine engine failure. A dirty filter prevents raw water from being drawn into the cooling system.
Outboard and stern drive owners should disassemble the propeller several times a year to check the driveshaft for fishing line. Lines discarded in the water can become entangled in the shaft and eventually damage the driveshaft seals, allowing water to enter the gearbox, leading to catastrophic failure and costly repairs. Again, check your owner's manual for instructions on removing the strut and inspecting the shaft.
